Material Identity
Demantoid is the green variety of andradite garnet, colored by chromium and prized since its discovery in the Ural Mountains in the nineteenth century. The name refers to its diamond-like dispersion: among garnets, none splits light into spectral color as strongly. Fine material quickly became a favorite of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century jewelers, and it remains one of the most valued garnets.
Visual Character
The color ranges from bright yellow-green through vivid grass green to a deep, saturated emerald tone. What sets demantoid apart in motion is its fire: flashes of rainbow color inside the green, visible as the stone turns. A signature feature of some material is the horsetail inclusion, golden fibrous sprays radiating from a central point. Far from a defect, a well-formed horsetail is prized as a fingerprint of origin and character.
Meaning and Cultural Context
Green gems have long been linked with vitality, renewal, and the first growth of the year, and demantoid's lively color sits naturally within that symbolism. Its historical moment adds a cultural layer: the stone carries associations with the artistry of turn-of-the-century jewelry, when it appeared in delicate, intricate designs. Wearers today may value it for personal meaning as much as for that heritage.
Jewelry and Care
Demantoid is somewhat softer than many garnets, and facet edges can wear over years of daily ring use; pendants and earrings preserve the polish longest. The fibrous horsetail inclusions, while beautiful, can create slight internal weakness, so hard impacts should be avoided. Clean gently with mild soapy water, skip ultrasonic machines, and store the stone separately so harder gems do not scratch its facets.
Choosing This Stone
Three qualities guide the eye: the saturation of the green, the visible dispersion as the stone moves, and the presence and form of any horsetail inclusion. Deeper green stones trade some brightness for richness, while lighter yellow-greens show their fire more openly. Decide which expression appeals to you, and view candidates in motion rather than under a single static lamp.
