The name iolite comes from violet language, and GIA describes the gem as strongly pleochroic. When the stone is turned, the viewer can see different colors in different crystal directions. Cut orientation matters. Gemdat notes that cordierite can show deep violet-blue, blue-grey, or yellowish-brown directions, and that correct orientation is needed for attractive deep blue faceted gems. A cutter cannot erase the directional nature of iolite; the goal is to present it honestly.

Jewelry Suitability and Care
Iolite has useful hardness, but it is not carefree. GIA places it at Mohs 7 to 7.5, while the care guide also notes perfect cleavage in one direction, limited toughness, and the risk that a hard blow, extreme pressure, or sharp temperature change may break the stone.
That makes pendants and earrings especially sensible. Rings can work for careful wear with a thoughtful setting, but iolite should not be treated like sapphire in a daily hard-wear ring. Bracelets need more caution because wrists meet surfaces repeatedly.

Ask about cut and orientation. A well-cut iolite should use pleochroism intelligently rather than hiding the best color. Also ask whether the listing is using water sapphire language; that phrase should never replace the material name cordierite.
