Boulder opal is the established gemological term, closely tied to Queensland, Australia, where silica-rich fluids deposited opal in cracks and cavities of iron-rich host rock. Rather than cutting the opal seam free, lapidaries keep the brown matrix as backing or frame, so the finished stone is a natural composite of two materials. Opal itself is hydrated silica: its play-of-color arises from light diffracting through regularly stacked silica spheres, a structure fundamentally different from crystalline quartz despite the shared chemistry. The word iron refers only to that host rock, not to any metallic content in the gem.
