Material Identity

Moonstone is a feldspar; opal is hydrated silica. That single sentence settles the comparison before it begins, because the two materials differ in composition, water content, optical mechanism, and care. Moonstone's adularescence comes from light scattering between alternating feldspar layers. Opal's play of color, when present, comes from ordered arrays of microscopic silica spheres diffracting light—and common opal without that ordering shows no play of color at all. Both are pale and luminous enough to be confused in a photograph, which is exactly why the mineral identity matters.

Visual Character

Moonstone appears as a translucent body—white, cream, peach, or gray—with a glow that slides across the dome of a cabochon as the stone moves, most prized when the sheen is blue over a near-colorless ground. The effect is continuous and gentle. Opal's display is discontinuous and specific: patches, pinpoints, or rolling flashes of spectral color—green, orange, red, violet—that switch on and off with the viewing angle. Body tones range from milky white to black, and fire opal adds transparent orange-to-red material to the family. Material marketed as rainbow moonstone is a feldspar closer to labradorite, a naming distinction worth noting when shopping.

Meaning and Cultural Context

Moonstone's symbolism draws on lunar imagery—cycles, intuition, night, and beginnings—across several traditions. Opal has accumulated a more turbulent cultural history: celebrated in Roman sources, a favored stone of the nineteenth century, and briefly shadowed by a literary superstition that never belonged to the stone itself. Today both materials appear in symbolic and commemorative jewelry, and their associations remain part of their living cultural life alongside their gemology.

Jewelry and Care

Opal contains water, and some material can craze—develop fine surface cracks—if it dries out or suffers sudden temperature change, so it should be kept away from heat, dry storage, and ultrasonic cleaning, and wiped rather than soaked. It is also relatively soft and scratches against harder gems in a shared jewelry box. Moonstone's vulnerability is different: as a feldspar it has cleavage planes and can split along them under a sharp blow, so protected settings suit rings. Both do best with mild soap, lukewarm water, and individual soft storage.
