Rose quartz is a pink variety of quartz with SiO2 chemistry, part of the same mineral family as amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, and clear quartz. Two formations share the name. The material common in jewelry and carving is a translucent, massive rose quartz of intergrown crystals. A rarer type forms distinct, well-shaped crystals with different color behavior and is not typical bead material.
Visual Character
The hazy look of massive rose quartz comes from microscopic fibrous inclusions that scatter light through the body of the stone. Tones range from pale pink and rose to faintly bluish or reddish hues. In some cabochons, dense fine rutile needles produce a six-rayed star when lit from the right angle. Its appeal does not rest on clarity; the milky, clouded softness is the character of the material itself.

Rose quartz is traditionally linked with love in its broadest sense: friendship, family closeness, reconciliation, and gentleness toward oneself. It is often given between friends, to a mother or sister, or carried after a parting as a token of warmth. Rose quartz is usually fashioned into beads and cabochons that show off its glow rather than its sparkle. Like other quartz it holds up well in everyday wear, but sharp blows can chip it, household chemicals can dull the polish, and prolonged strong sunlight can fade the pink of some material. Wash it with mild soap and water, dry it gently, and keep it out of extended direct sun.

Look for the tone that genuinely pleases you, from pale and milky to a clearer rose, and read the cloudiness as character rather than flaw. If a star effect interests you, examine cabochons under a small, focused light and turn them slowly.
