Silver Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow. At rest it reads as deep, opaque black; tilted under light, a silver-gray sheen surfaces and travels across the stone. That sheen comes from microscopic inclusions aligned within the glass, reflecting light along a single plane rather than sparkling from many points.

The silver band is broad and soft, closer to moonlight on water than to the pinpoint flashes of a faceted gem. A round bead lets the sheen sweep over the curve in one continuous stroke; a flat cabochon shows it as a wide stripe against the black ground. In a bracelet strand, the effect moves from bead to bead as the wrist turns, lines appearing, fading, and returning. Because the sheen depends entirely on angle, a piece photographed from only one direction can look plain black.
