Material Identity
Variscite is a hydrated aluminum phosphate with the formula AlPO4 · 2H2O, and gem references place its Mohs hardness around 4.5 to 5. The name derives from Variscia, the historical Latin name for the Vogtland region of Germany, where the mineral was first described in the nineteenth century. The most familiar gem material comes from Utah, where variscite fills nodules and seams in phosphate-rich rock and is often intergrown with related phosphates. Because the water in its structure is part of the mineral itself, prolonged heat can alter it, a point that matters later for cleaning. Variscite is a recognized species, though in the marketplace it is routinely mistaken for turquoise, the stone it most often stands beside in cabochon trays.
Visual Character
Variscite reads as green without flash: apple, mint, and yellow-green tones, sometimes shading toward blue-green or gray-green, usually opaque to faintly translucent. What gives individual stones their character is the matrix. Cream, tan, or brown webbing can lace through the green in fine crackle patterns, and some nodules show concentric banding where the phosphate crystallized in layers. There is no sparkle and no pleochroism to speak of; the interest is in surface and pattern, like a painted egg or a glazed ceramic. Luster runs from waxy to vitreous on a good polish. Stones cut with an intact web of pale matrix are often the most distinctive, because no two patterns repeat.

Green phosphate stones from the American Southwest carry a long jewelry tradition, and variscite shares in it: Utah material has been set into silverwork alongside turquoise for generations, valued on its own terms by lapidaries who prize the minty hues that turquoise does not produce. In contemporary symbolism, soft green stones are commonly linked with renewal, gardens, and slow growth, and wearers often choose variscite for exactly that palette. At 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale, variscite scratches under a steel blade and loses its polish in a ring that meets door frames and countertops daily. It wears best as pendants, earrings, brooches, and beads, where contact is limited. The structural water argues against heat: keep variscite away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and prolonged sun on a windowsill, and avoid acids and solvents, which can attack the phosphate surface. A soft cloth with lukewarm soapy water, rinsed and dried promptly, is enough. Store cabochons in individual pouches so quartz, garnet, or metal settings from neighboring pieces cannot scuff them.

Ask sellers to state plainly whether a green cabochon is variscite or turquoise, since the confusion is common and the minerals differ: turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate, while variscite carries no copper as its coloring agent. Beyond identification, select for color that pleases you and for matrix patterns that look intentional rather than muddy. A variscite with a crisp cream web across apple green, well polished and evenly domed, shows the stone at its most characteristic.
